In music, note values tell us how long a sound lasts. They give rhythm its shape, guiding the flow of each piece just like punctuation shapes speech. 🧠 Where Do Beats Come From?

Most examples you’ll see on this page are based on 4/4 time, the most common time signature in music. That means there are four beats in each measure, and a quarter note gets 1 beat.

This helps us understand:

  • Whole Note = 4 beats (fills the measure)
  • Half Note = 2 beats
  • Quarter Note = 1 beat
  • Eighth Note = ½ beat
  • Sixteenth Note = ¼ beat

🎯 Note: These values are true in 4/4 time. In other time signatures, the number of beats per measure changes — but the relative length of each note stays consistent.

Sometimes we see a dot after a note – like this: dotted half note
A dot placed after a note increases its length by half of its original value. This adds swing, space, and musical tension.

  • Dotted Half Note = 2 + 1 = 3 beats
  • Dotted Quarter Note = 1 + ½ = 1.5 beats
  • Dotted Eighth Note = ½ + ¼ = ¾ beat
