Music Note Values

Understanding Note Values in Music

In music, note values tell us how long a sound lasts. They give rhythm its shape, guiding the flow of each piece just like punctuation shapes speech. Whether you’re reading sheet music or playing by ear, understanding note values helps you feel the beat, control timing, and express yourself musically.

🎡 Why Note Values Matter

  • πŸ•°οΈ Define rhythm and pulse
  • 🎹 Show how long each note should be held
  • πŸ“– Make sheet music readable and playable
  • 🧘 Shape musical expression and phrasing

🧠 Where Do Beats Come From?

Most examples you’ll see on this page are based on 4/4 time, the most common time signature in music. That means there are four beats in each measure, and a quarter note gets 1 beat.

This helps us understand:

  • Whole Note = 4 beats (fills the measure)
  • Half Note = 2 beats
  • Quarter Note = 1 beat
  • Eighth Note = Β½ beat
  • Sixteenth Note = ΒΌ beat

🎯 Note: These values are true in 4/4 time. In other time signatures, the number of beats per measure changes β€” but the relative length of each note stays consistent.

🌳 Rhythm Tree Overview

Note Type Symbol Beats (in 4/4) Divides Into
Whole Note whole note 4 2 Half Notes
Half Note half note 2 2 Quarter Notes
Quarter Note 1 2 Eighth Notes
Eighth Note eighth note Β½ 2 Sixteenth Notes
Sixteenth Note sixteenth note ΒΌ 2 Thirty-Second Notes

🎯 What Does a Dot Do?

Sometimes we see a dot after a note – like this: dotted half note
A dot placed after a note increases its length by half of its original value. This adds swing, space, and musical tension.

  • Dotted Half Note = 2 + 1 = 3 beats
  • Dotted Quarter Note = 1 + Β½ = 1.5 beats
  • Dotted Eighth Note = Β½ + ΒΌ = ΒΎ beat

🀫 Rests: Silence in Music

Rests are symbols that tell you when to pause β€” matching each note’s duration with silence.

🀫 Matching Rests in Music

Whole Rest (whole resthangs below line) 4 Whole Note
Half Rest half rest (sits on line) 2 Half Note
Quarter Rest quarter rest 1 Quarter Note
Eighth Rest eighth rest Β½ Eighth Note
